    Quick answer

A Shopify image should be any shape at about 2048 pixels on the shortest side, up to 20 MB, in JPEG, PNG, GIF, WEBP. These figures come from Shopify's own help pages. This free checker reads your photo in your browser, shows a pass or fail for each rule, and exports a corrected copy.

This page tests a product photo against the Shopify rules we could find, using the real pixels of your file. The figures were read on Shopify's own page.

Rules a pixel test cannot judge, such as what may appear in the photo, are listed beside the report.

What else to know about Shopify photos

Shopify sets no background or shape rule for product photos.

    2048 x 2048 pixels usually displays best.

The limit is 5000 x 5000 pixels or 25 megapixels, under 20 MB.

Use one shape across a collection so your grid lines up.

    Questions sellers ask

What size should a Shopify product image be?

Aim for about 2048 pixels on the shortest side. The minimum tested here is not set. These figures come from Shopify's own help pages, so confirm them in your Shopify account before a large upload.

What shape should a Shopify photo be?

We found no required shape for Shopify, so the checker does not test one. Your photo keeps its own shape when you use Fix All, and only the size and file are changed.

What is the file size limit for Shopify images?

The checker uses 20 MB, based on Shopify's own help pages. Fix All lowers the JPEG quality first, then the pixel size if it has to, to get under that figure.

Which image formats does Shopify accept?

The checker passes JPEG, PNG, GIF, WEBP, based on Shopify's own help pages. Fix All exports a JPEG. If your browser cannot open a file, export it as a JPEG from your phone or editor first.

What background does Shopify want on the main image?

In this checker the background is not fixed by a rule we could test, based on Shopify's own help pages. Fix All does not repaint a background behind your product, so use the background remover if this check fails.

Why did my Shopify photo fail the checker?

The report names the exact rule, such as shape, size, file limit, format or background. Fix All handles shape, size and file limit. A background failure usually needs a new photo in better light or the background remover.

If my photo passes here, will Shopify accept it?

Not necessarily. A pass means the photo meets the rules we can test from pixels. Shopify can apply content rules or change its requirements, so a pass is a useful check and not a promise of acceptance.

Is this Shopify photo checker free, and is my photo uploaded?

It is free and needs no account. Your photo is read by your own browser and never sent to a server. This is an unofficial tool and is not affiliated with Shopify.
